A Tragedy

Samuel took his dog, Salty, for its usual walk in the park. The park was just across the road from Samuel’s house. Usually, Samuel put Salty on a lead but Salty refused that day so Samuel let it run about on its own.

Samuel shouted for Salty to stop when they reached the road. Salty stopped, turned around, barked at its owner and wagged its tail excitedly. Samuel shouted at Salty and told it not to cross the road. However, Salty was so excited to get to the park that it disobeyed its master. It barked again at Samuel and raced across the road. Samuel screamed for his dog. He ran as fast as he could to catch up with Salty. However, he was not fast enough. A driver ran over Salty without even knowing what he had done. He sped off without stopping. Samuel cried out in shock as he dashed onto the road. Salty was lying motionless on the road. Its white fur was soaked in blood. Samuel knew that Salty could not be saved. Salty struggled to open its eyes and whimpered. Then, it closed its eyes forever.

Tears fell from Samuel’s eyes. He knew that his favourite pet had died. If only he had forced it to wear its lead.
