20 Sept. 20….

Dearest Sushil,

Yesterday we had the elections of the Students’ Union of our college. It was very exciting and I wish to write to you about it.

The college is a busy place on all days but I have never seen such a large crowd on the campus. All the students had turned up. Perhaps there were some outsiders too. Everyone was busy canvassing for the candidates for the offices of Union President, Secretary and Treasurer. Very intelligent methods were used. There were free cold drinks and all signs of affection and friendship.

One of the candidates had gone really too far. He offered to take all his supporters to the cinema. And by chance some of the best films are running these days. But, inspite of all his wealth and expenditure, he could not win. Young men had enjoyed at his expense but they had voted according to the dictates of their conscience. I felt sorry for him. But this is a good sign too. Insidious voting is good for democracy.

The day was very colourful and interesting. There was much activity and excitement. There was some suspense too but it was soon over. The winning candidates were taken out in a procession. There was much singing and dancing.

Yours ever,

Rajat.
