Essay No. 01

Netaji was born at Cuttack in Orissa in a large upper middle class family of brothers and sisters. His father was a government official at Cuttack.

Subhash was a very intelligent child and did extremely well in studies, always topping his class. He completed his higher studies in England, then applied for a job in the Indian Civil Service, and stood first.

He had a great desire to serve his country so he resigned from the ICS within a year and became a freedom fighter.

A born leader, he was a man of daring schemes and unflinching determination.

In 1938, he became the President of the Indian National Congress, but his views clashed with that of Gandhiji’s. The rift between them widened and he resigned from the Congress and formed the Forward Bloc.

Subhash Chandra Bose ran away from his home in Calcutta, eluding the police and travelled to Afghanistan. He managed to reach Germany, then Japan. At that time World War II was at its height. In Malaya, he organised his 60,000 strong Indian National Army to fight India’s war of Independence from outside India. This was the first national army to hoist the Tricolour of India on free Manipur and Kohima.

He was reported dead on August 19, 1945. Rumours spread that Subhash Chandra Bose was not actually dead, but no one could prove this for a fact. For many, his death remains a question mark even today. His home in Calcutta, is frequented by thousands of people who visit it to pay homage to this fearless, great leader. Subhash Chandra Bose shall always be remembered for his contribution to the freedom struggle.

Subhash Chandra Bose

Subhash Chandra Bose, also known as Netaji, was one of the greatest sons and patriots of India. He was born in Calcutta on 23 January, 1897. His father, Jankinath Bose, was a well- known lawyer. The name of his mother was Srimati Prabhavati. His parents had great influence on the boy Subhash.

This pride and glory of India, called Subhash Chandra Bose, was a very intelligent and brilliant student. He came out a topper in his intermediate examination. He passed his B.A. in 1919 from Calcutta Presidency College. He went to England for higher studies and passed the I.C.S. Examination. I.C.S. was equivalent to the present I.A.S. examination. But he did not accept any government position. He returned to India and joined the freedom movement.

He was influenced by Gandhiji but deferred with him on the question of the method of attaining freedom. He believed that the use of army and force were necessary to throw out the British. He was a great revolutionary. The Britishers were afraid of him and confined him to his own house. But he escaped from there disguised as a pathan and formed the Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauz, with the help of Japan, to fight the British. He said to the people of India, “Give me blood and I will give you freedom.” He gave India the famous slogan ‘Jai Hind.’

He was a great patriot and freedom fighter. He was very proud of being an Indian. He once slapped an English teacher in his college because he had insulted India and Indians. He went to jail many times during the freedom struggle. He was elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1938. He also sought the help from Germany to get India’s freedom and independence. But, unfortunately, he died in a plane crash in 1945 before India could gain freedom from the foreign rule.

Recently his birth centenary was celebrated on the national level. On this occasion, his long and valuable services to the country were remembered gratefully. The young men and women of India should follow his example. They Should dedicate themselves to the service of the country. We Indians are very proud of Netaji. His teachings and work will continue to inspire the Indians for many centuries to come.
