Essay No. 01
Before some time, people in the national capital Delhi used to curse the public transport system. Badly behaved, irresponsible and rash bus drivers, showing no sign of courtesy even to the women and elders, made traveling a painfully and scary task.
It was difficult to tell whether the bus would stop to pick up the waiting passengers and whether it would reach the destination on time. Usual fear of long traffic jams owing to processions, the overall condition of the buses with torn and uncomfortable seats, over-crowding inside and the rattling sound of the engine forced people to desire for an alternative transport system.
The physical construction work on the Delhi Metro Rail started on 1st October 1998. The first line of the Delhi Metro Rail was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, on 24th December 2002. With the arrival of metro rail traveling within the city became noiseless, joyful, exciting, fast, dust free and completely dependable. There is no fear of being late to work or clothes getting dirty while travelling.
One can travel in the comfort of air-conditioned coaches, while the information about the stops is continuously communicated on intercom. While on the move in metro, one can enjoy the outside view making lives comfortable and satisfying.
Travelling in Delhi Metro is of great pride. It has improved the health of people by making traveling stress free and fast. This new system of train transportation called Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was started in collaboration with Japan. The cities of New Delhi, Old Delhi, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida and Faridabad are served by this metro system. Moreover, it is India’s 3rd urban rapid transportation system, after the Kolkata Metro and Chennai’s Mass Rapid Transit System. It is India’s 1st modern rapid transit system too.
The popularity of this great blessing can be known from the fact that it provides commutation to more than half a million passengers daily. Its completion and acceptance by people makes India proud. Moreover, it shows that India is capable of achieving great feats.

Delhi Metro Railway
The word Metro is used for the railways all over the world. Metro railway is a pollution free intra-city means for travelling short and long distances. Kolkata was the first city in our country to use this service of Metro Railways.
In metropolitan cities like Delhi, where millions of people inhabit, the life is very hectic. Today pollution is the greatest menace to mankind and city roads have become a virtual hell for there are 12,000 buses, 50,000 auto rickshaws and many other vehicles also. Moreover the transport facilities in Delhi were not up to the mark. So to solve this problem to some extent Metro Railway Project has been undertaken in Delhi. Delhi’s people themselves too own a large number of personal vehicles which emit lots of smoke, thereby increasing the pollution in the atmosphere. So, the Metro Railway Project was started in Delhi.
In the initial phase the Metro Railways chose the junction from Tri-Nagar to Tees Hazari, which is now complete and commuting between the Tri-nagar and Tees Hazari has become a regular thing, Government is taking every possible step to complete other Metro Rail Protects also as soon as possible.
Although there are many features of the Metro Rail Service, two are worth mentioning. For the first time in India not only the healthy people but blind people also have a comfortable walk to and from the Metro rail, for Braille Block have been made on all the Metro Platforms for making it handicapped friendly.
Another unique feature of Metro Railway is that all coaches are equipped with emergency buttons with “talk back” facility with the driver of the train. In case of eve teasing a woman can press this button and talk to the driver, in which case the driver can immediately seal the door of that particular coach. Thus by the sealing of doors! of the coach it becomes impossible for the culprit to escape. The driver will then contact the central control room for police help and the door will only be opened when the police reach the spot to arrest the culprit. Metro also has panel of good doctors on duty near all the stations in case of emergency.
Thus, in a metropolitan city like Delhi, Metro Railways is a great convenience for the masses.
