My dear Atom,
I have not received any message from you for a long time. How are you? I have to tell you some bitter experiences recently occurred to me.
A terrible flood had swept away hundreds of villages and thousands of lives in our state just in the beginning of September. It was caused on the eve of the famous Durga Puja in our state of west Bengal. A heavy downpour caused the rivers to overflow. In addition to this, the dams and water reservoirs released much water that was impossible to flow through the rivers. Don’t forget our rivers are not regularly dredged. So, they are unable to carry excessive water. However, the flood had come our state as a curse. I witnessed the plight of the people of the districts. They had lost their houses, cattle and crops. They were rescued by the Army, relief societies and ordinary people. The worst districts are Nadia, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Malda, Murshidabad, Hooghly etc. The plight of the people knew no bounds. They were too hungry, too depressed and too frustrated. The relief societies, the government and the ordinary people must come along to meet their needs.
