An unhealthy person may not take much interest in work.

Good health is very essential for improving the quality of one’s life. Moreover, the character of a person is developed and it helps him to remain in good health. Co-operation, quality of leadership, honesty, mutual understanding, and team spirit are other important qualities that are developed in person. Moreover, spirit of self-reliance, justice, fair-minded play, sportsmanship, and sporting spirit is learnt through different games. Thus, people become adventurous, social, disciplined, and more conscious of their duties towards society and nation.
The kind of enthusiasm, pleasure, excitement, and fun provided by games and sports is unmatched. They bring confidence and teach to take both success and failure positively and in a sporting way. A player becomes broad-minded, tolerant, and more honest in his approach and toughs. He learns the art of taking quick and right decisions. He may not lose his temper even if he faces defeat because he would take it calmly and next time he would try to perform better with more determination. Thus, the negative realities of life are learnt by a person with a smiling face. They also help in overcoming the feelings of violence, arrogance, and superiority.
Government and educational institutions have become sports-conscious and huge funds are being allocated for the promotion of different sports. Although sports in India are a state matter, the Centre helps the states by granting financial assistance and laying down rules for sports activities. Many states have now introduced games and sports as a compulsory subject in schools. Some of them have also started sports schools and sports hostels.

The Value of Games
Good health is the greatest blessing of God. Healthy persons can think properly, act promptly and work persistently. And in the present-day world work is the only way to success.
An unhealthy person will remain unhappy and dispirited. Games keep us physically fit. In all the games some rules must be followed. Those who play foul are not allowed to play.
If rules of the game are not observed games will no longer remain the civilized activities of human beings.
Games make us disciplined in thinking and in actions. And discipline among the members of the society is of the greatest value. Our animal instincts are brought under control.
Games teach us the team spirit. We must play as a team; individual game spoils the chances of victory. Every player cooperates with another player in defeating the other side. If we develop this very team spirit in our daily life perhaps most of the problems of the world will be solved.
While playing one has to obey the captain. On the field, the player is not supposed to dispute the decision of the captain. If the players start disobeying the captain, there will be anarchy on the field.
In life, if we obey our parents at home, teachers at schools and laws of the land, the world will be better.
The possibility of defeat should not unnerve us. Sometimes we fear failure. We forget if `hopes are dups, fears may be biars.’ Moreover, defeat should not disappoint us. Games teach us the way to face failure which we come across at the adversary corners.

Value of Sports and Games
Sports can be taken as a part of education, for they seek to develop three sides of one’s nature—physical, mental and moral. Sports make the body strong and active, and some particular games train the intellect and develop the sense of morality, too. They provide sufficient exercise to the body, and the rules guiding a particular game make the players disciplined, while they play it. The right player in the right place can discover the weak points of the opponents and can take advantage of them. Thus his sense of responsibility increases, and as he learns to obey his trainer or his captain, he learns to respect others in his life.
Matches and tournaments are held to put to test the skill, stamina and hardship of the participants. Medals, shields and cups are awarded to the players for achieving excellence and a high standard of performance in their respective fields. In a match game, a sense of honour for others, encouragement of self and that of the team-mates, and a healthy spirit of rivalry inspire the player’s morale. He becomes a complete man.
Hockey, football, cricket, tennis, badminton, rowing, swimming all these sports give good exercise to the limbs, and provide a good deal of excitement and entertainment.
True sportsmanship means taking part in sports and playing the game in conformity with the rules prescribed, having equal respect and appreciation for the rivals, as the case of a civilized war. A true sportsman, who observes faithfully all such rules of the games, is found to possess disciplined habits in his private or public life, too, and his character is easily build up with a solid base.
Sports create and develop the spirit of a healthy competition. Sportsmanship implies ‘fair play’, and not ‘foul play’. Fouls in games are penalized in the field. Fairness, honesty and integrity are the main characteristics of an ideal sportsman. True sportsmanship consists in existing, negotiating and acting in harmony with others, without any friction or mutual jealousy. The spirit of true sportsmanship demands cheerfulness, even in the face of a defeat.
