Feminism

Feminism is a belief and aim that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men. In other words, a social movement, signifying imbalance in society because of the unequal status of man and woman is called ‘feminism’.

The social awareness among women is the indication of society’s advancement. Energetic women are mentally disturbed by the dominating attitude of the men who show unjust attitude of being superior. Constant agitations from women can bring a change in the behaviour of the unfair and dominating men. This will bring about a better order if not today but at least in the near future.

Even today in some houses, aged women harass their daughters-in-law. Decades ago, clashes between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law were at their highest. However, the age-long conflict between them seems to be endless. Due to their daily quarrels, sometimes, a husband may turn wild with anger at his wife and rejects her as a companion of life.

Feminism is a word that often finds a place in newspapers and magazines. It is a subject of talk in the radio and the television. Though the feminist movement is very active in western countries, even their women are still given a back seat. It is usually believed that women are gentle, soft-spoken and shy by nature. However, there are women who can outdo men in confidence, supremacy and aggressiveness.

Many modern women are educated and employed at good positions. They have emerged into the social scene and the day is not too far when they will dominate the national scene. However, up to certain extent it is true that women are not fit for all kinds of jobs. Their presence in the military and the police is limited, but they are as brave as men are.

It is a long-standing demand that women should have equal opportunities in society as men. Unfortunately, in some homes, husbands arc very dominant and put their wives to much humiliation by discourteous behaviour and domestic violence.

The present status of women in India has to be further consolidated and improved. Women should rise as one powerful body and fight the evils faced by them. They should raise their voices against male arrogance. They should come forward and take active part in the political affairs of the country. They should declare and achieve economic independence to play stronger role in society. It is said that God helps those who help themselves and it is equally true in the case of women empowerment.
