Dr. Rajendra Prasad – First President of India

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was a great leader of our country. He was born on December 3, 1884 at Zirader, a small village in the district of Saran. His father, Shri Mahadeb Sahay, was well known for his honesty and straightforwardness.

Rajendra Prasad received his early education at home and learnt Persian and Urdu. He later went to Chopra Zila School, and stood first in the entrance examination. On getting a scholarship, he went to Calcutta for higher studies. He was extremely intelligent and hardworking. After completing his MA, he worked as a professor in GBB College, Muzaffar Pur for a year. He then passed the Bachelor of Law examination and started his practice at the Calcutta High Court. Later he shifted to Patna.

Thereafter, Dr. Rajendra Prasad joined Gandhiji and fought tirelessly to free India from the British rule. Along with other freedom fighters, he went to jail many times. After India became free, he was elected its first President. He retired in 1962, and passed away on February 28, 1963 at Patna. He was a gentle, kind and simple soul who worked tirelessly for a cause he believed in. He was highly respected not only in India but all over the world. The country salutes him even today.
