School Libraries

School libraries supplement and enrich the studies of the school curriculum from all angles and at all stages. They offer opportunities to develop personal attributes which need not necessarily be of the literary kind. There are books on many subjects to suit one’s tastes and inclinations.

The chief aim of any library is to provide material for reading, whether for pleasure or information. It is also a place where one can learn how to use reference books. This is essential if one wants to discover new facts and do research on any subject. We also learn to respect and take care of books. A school library teaches us all this so that we do not feel lost when we have to visit a public library. We also learn how and where to locate the right books.

It is generally found that school children do not appreciate- the facilities provided by a school library. We do not realize its importance in our lives and what it can do to make us complete human beings, both as individuals and as members of society. In a library we can enlarge our minds by reading the world’s greatest literature and gain access to the accumulated experience, imagination and wisdom of the past and present. We can start life where our ancestors left off, for their trials and mistakes are recorded within the covers of books and we can learn from them. Thus we can become better human beings.

Let us resolve, therefore, to utilize our school library more gainfully, and not to consider the library period as a free one—meant only to glance through the pages of a magazine, or sit and whisper with our friends!
