Waiting for a Bus

Sometimes, when my school bus does not come in the morning, I have to take a private bus. This is quite convenient for there is no rush and it is not hot. However, in the afternoon it is a different story. At that time, the sun beats down mercilessly on my head, the roads are full of heavy traffic, and the atmosphere is choked with pollution.

My bus-stop is a crowded one. The small shade that it provides is not enough for the large crowd which is waiting there. My bag feels heavier than it did in the morning, and I am tired and hungry. But then so are most of the people standing around me!

Men and women stare in the direction from where their bus will come, waiting impatiently. However, a group of college students appears cheerful, chatting, laughing and slapping each other on the back. They don’t seem to be affected by the heat or the delay in the arrival of their bus.

Finally, it comes. Suddenly there is a mad rush towards the bus as everyone tries to be the first one to clamber’ aboard. I too join the mad rush and manage to squeeze myself up into the safety of the bus. Once inside, I heave a sigh of relief and look around for a seat. If I am lucky I get one, otherwise I travel all the way, hanging on to the overhead bars for dear life!
