Tiger – An Endangered Species

The big cat, tiger is one of the most magnificent creatures of the earth. Its face with a pair of burning eyes inspires awe. A big Muscular body covered with shimmering bold strips over yellow or white background makes it a picture of beauty. The tiger as carrier of Goddess Durga and our mascot-has deep relationship with our land and culture. India is known as ‘The land of Tiger’.

Unfortunately, this pride of India faces threat of extinction. Once in lacs, today there are only 1600-1700 tigers left in the sanctuaries ever under threat of the bullets of illegal poachers. Recently a shocking fact came to light that tigers had been wiped out of Sariska sanctuary.

There are several reasons for the depletion of the tiger population. Over the-centuries it has been hunted down by the kings, nawabs, zamindars, colonial rulers and others as an act of bravery. Quacks made virility drugs out of tiger bones and other parts. There also was belief that eating its flesh made a man as powerful as the tiger. The people of fashion wore tiger skin wear. Today tiger skins and bones earn a treasure in illegal markets. The poachers don’t mind taking risks in killing this valuable creature. With the increase in human population tiger habitats have shrunk into small forest areas. Its food resources are disappearing. The clash with village folks has furthered endangered the existence of the tiger.

India has declared tiger as an endangered species. With national and international wild life movements several schemes are on to save this precious animal. It is our duty to lend a helping hand in efforts to preserve this treasurable animal.
