During the first world war, the conditions of the wounded in battle was very bad. They were like god forsaken men and moved about hither and thither irrespective of their pain and sufferings. Their sufferings were innumerable and the death toll was rising heavily.

While proper care would have saved many of their jives, it was little heeded by the warring nation’s intent on destroying each other.

Florence Nightingale who was a dedicated nurse, serving the wounded and needy during the Crimean War tried hard to protect the injured men and save them from the clutches of death by immediately attending on them. Her tireless service with devotion during day and night earned for her the respect cf all wounded men. She was popularly known as the “Lady of the lamp”.

The lamp of kindness and service lit by Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War was kept ablaze and on the onslaught of the first world war, a society for serving the wounded was formed in 1914. Thus the ‘Red Cross Society’ was started and later developed into a worldwide organization.

The Red Cross Society owes its inception to Florence Nightingale who sowed the seed for such work independently. And the motto of the society is to render help to the reedy not only during the war but also during the natural calamities like floods and famines.

A movement that had its genesis during war, has new became a well knit organization to serve the people all over the world wherever and whenever a natural calamity like flood or earth quake occurs.

Irrespective of the caste, creed or colour, the members rush to render assistance to the needy whether they are friends or foes without expecting any reward for the same.

So while two countries are opposed to each other both of them respectfully give men way to the Red Cross when they rush to serve mankind.

It is a well accepted international convention to protect and safeguard the members of the Red Cross.
