Family Planning

England is a small country in area with a low population. But Britain has been ruling over the lands and seas and has established its colonies all over the world, expanded its trade and industries and has been acclaimed as one of the big powers in the world, even after two world wars, utterly defeated and sustaining irreparable loss Germany, another small country in the world has posed many problems to the world community. It has also become one of the leading countries in the world in scientific advance and development.

Japan is another example. Completely crushed after the explosion of atom bombs dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki and humiliated by the big powers it has risen up in esteem amidst the developed countries of the world. What do all these examples indicate? The strength and property of a country depends upon the quality and culture of its people.

India is one of the vast countries in the world with sixty-four crores of people living but still it is considered as one of the backward countries in the world’ This will show that the greatness of a country does not depend upon the hugeness of its population. India is one of the Over populated countries and our population is increasing at the rate of one million people per month. If this present birth rate is left unchecked, this will result in the scarcity of the necessities of life food, clothing and shelter. This will add to the rate of unemployment, out-break of epidemics and discontent and frustration among people. Even sunshine, air and water will not-be sufficient for the people.

It is therefore economically advisable to adopt family planning in order to control the birth rate. The family planning is essential for the welfare of our nation but this is indeed for the welfare of the family. Simple methods are being advocated to curtail the birth rate such as raising the age of marriage of boys and girls, use of contraceptives and other birth control methods for preventing pregnancy, legalisation of abortions, sterilisation of Men and women and educating the masses about the advantages of limiting the size of their families

But some people for their personal and political interest have been advancing arguments against family planning which are shallow and not sustainable. Religious prejudices have been overcome and the government is keen on carrying out its family planning programme. The sixth plan accords top priority to the family planning.

The state Governments have been authorized to make sterilization compulsory by enacting appropriate law. Special measures to increase the level of female education in backward areas have been taken. Changes are contemplated in the rules of service of public servants to ensure the adopting of small families. Intensified drive has been launched in most of the states for sterilisation.

Even in villages, people have started realizing the advantages of family planning. Family planning consciousness has been awakened among the people through intensive propaganda that the people have realised the folly of big families.
