Dear Kishan,

We have got a marriage very recently in our family. You will be interested to know how a wedding is conducted in our community.

The marriage is usually arranged by the elders. The auspicious day is fixed by the family priest. The marriage party is called Barat. It consists of the bridegroom and his parents with relatives and friends. It marches to the bride’s house. The procession is spectacular. A bands plays at the head of the procession. The bridegroom is riding on a mare. People are marching and dancing.

When it reaches the bride’s house, the marriage party is warmly welcomed and smartly entertained. After this the bride and bridegroom sit before the sacred fire. A priest recites the Mantras from Vedas and then the couple takes round of the fire seven times. After this, there is a dinner.

The barat with the newlyweds is seen off by the bride’s near and dear ones.

I am sending you some photographs of some of the main rituals of the wedding.

Yours sincerely,

Arvind Narayana
