Who compiled the first American English Dictionary?

The first DICTIONARY OF THE AMERICAN LANGUAGE was compiled by Samuel Johnson Jr and published in New York in 1798. His father, Dr Samuel Johnson, sometime President of Columbia University, and author of the first text on American grammar (1756), was almost exactly contemporaneous with his celebrated namesake in England, though they were not related. The first complete American dictionary was An American Dictionary of the English Language, by Noah Webster, New York 1828. Its 70,000 words were some 12,000 in excess on the number contained in any dictionary hitherto either British or American.
