Our National Bird-the Peacock

Perhaps the most beautiful of God’s creations are the birds and animals of the world. And among the most beautiful of these, is the proud peacock. This stately creature is our national bird.

The peacock is a large bird. It is tall, has a beak, small beady eyes and a small plume on its head. What makes it outstanding is its multi-hued, resplendent tail. The deep, rich blue-green of a peacock’s tail has to be seen to be believed! It truly is a sight for the Gods when the peacock dances after a shower of rain, with its gorgeous tail spread out behind it like a fan.

The peacock can fly short distances and can even fly upto a reasonably tall tree. It eats worms and grains and can be seen in large, open and wooded areas. The snake is its biggest enemy. The female bird is called a peahen.

Peacock feathers are collected by children all over the world and used as bookmarks. A fairly large handicraft industry flourishes in our country — an industry which produces handicrafts made of peacock feathers for export.
