Monkeys

Monkeys are very interesting since they are men without tails. The origin of mankind according to Charles Darwin is from the monkeys. They are like human beings in shape and appearance.

Their heads and faces are similar to that of men and they move like men. The Scientists say that men are the cousins of the monkey as both hail from the same fore-father.

Monkeys live on trees. They can easily and quickly climb trees. Though they often come to the ground, they spend most of their time on the trees. They can jump from one tree to another and they travel quickly over the branches of trees for miles without touching the ground. During the nights, they sleep high up on the trees. They live on nuts, wild berries and fruits from the trees.

Monkeys are very curious. They are attracted by anything new and strange. Hence they are easily caught in traps. They initiate men and behave like men.

They are noted for their mimicry. So, tame monkeys can be taught all kinds of tricks to play. A monkey dressed in a man’s clothes will walk like a man proudly even carrying a walking stick and smoking a cigarette.

A monkey will sit on a chair, take up a newspaper and even pretend to read.

The Ape, Orangutan and the Gorilla are the powerful kinds of monkeys.

They are very Intelligent and strong. Their resemblance to man is very striking. They have been trained to do many hazardous jobs that men find risky and dangerous to do.

The Chimpanzee, another kind of the monkey family is highly intelligent and quick to learn and act.

Now there is a racket of grafting of monkey’s thyroids to human beings to make them look more young, active and energetic. And in the recent past there was the danger of large quantities of monkeys being caught alive and exported for that purpose to foreign countries.

Now steps have been taken to restrict and prohibit such large scale exodus of monkeys from India.

For a Hindu, the monkey is considered sacred and they are treated with favour and kindness by all pilgrims who visit the hill temples where they have taken protective shelter.
