Essay on “Sindhu Festival”

Many rivers and river valleys worldwide have played a significant role in the evolution, sustenance and development of civilisation. The mighty Sindhu River symbolises the power of the ancient Indian civilisation, which evolved over a period of thousands of years. The name of the river comes from the Sanskrit word Sindhu. It is mentioned in the Rig Veda. Words like Hindu, Hindustan and India have been derived from Sindhu and Indus, the name given to Sindhu by foreigners.

Sindhu festival aims at projecting the Indus as a symbol of India’s unity and communal harmony. A ritual is performed by 50 senior Lamas on the banks of the Sindhu. A host of cultural programmes are performed by representatives of various states. The celebrations on the banks end with a meal for all at lunchtime. The participants are taken around for a sightseeing trip after taking meals. The day concludes with a campfire and get-together at night.
