Must we learn English?

English is, arguably, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and it is acknowledged as the commercial and technological language of an internal anal standard. But that only partially explains its popularity.

English, which in the current times, aspires for a world status, was spoken only by a select few, some few hundred years ago. Over a period of time, it gained in strength and patronage. Today, almost four centuries after Shakespeare, it is used by several million people all over the world and has now attained a status almost akin to the mother tongue in many countries like India, Singapore, etc.

It is the language most suitable for the administrative jargon. It .is a suitable medium of instruction and is taught and learned with an avid interest at all levels. In India, it has proved a unifying force, mitigating to some extent regional and linguistic barriers, providing a common platform of communication for people who speak different dialects. It is, therefore, called, the associate official language.

Many people felt that the coming of independence did not augur well for English. This proved wrong, for it has survived the misgivings of skeptics and critics, and is taught with great enthusiasm in most public schools. It is responsible for broadening the outlook of the students and though sometimes it does encourage snobbery, its significance cannot be underestimated.

It cannot be denied that, the moment it is weeded out as the medium of instruction in higher education, like medicine, engineering and other sciences, the standard of education will register a fall. Eighty per cent of information stored in computers is in English. Most Internet messages are sent in English. The media souses English as a language of communication. It is a versatile language that has adopted and assimilated freely from the other languages. It cannot be denied that English is a language of many nuances. Its vocabulary conveys precisely and accurately, whatever needs to be said. More than anything else, it is a language that knows no frontiers. People in different countries and environments have evolved their own idioms, making it more colourful, varied and acceptable. Therefore, it is, imperative that all of us acquire at least a functional knowledge of English.
