Drug Addiction among the Youth

Drug addiction is assuming an epidemic proportion among the youth. As the drugs are being easily available and it seems the cheap thing to do, youngsters are increasingly taking to drugs. Drugs like cocaine heroines and marijuana are very addictive and demand ever-increasing doses. These drugs benumb the mind and lead to the occurrence of hallucinations. They plunge the users into a dreamy state of mind where he forgets his troubles and difficulties. The youth of today also make constant attempts to blend in with their seniors and peers and try to act ‘grown-up’. This peer pressure results in an introduction to drugs and slowly but steadily an addiction to them. However, this is not the most important reason why the youth today is drowning in the effects of narcotics and drugs. With increasing parental demands, harder education and pressure from society, youngsters take recourse to drugs as a means of forgetting their difficulties. Some are subject to neglect and harsh treatment from their parents. This a has a very strong psychological effect on the mind of youngsters and they get addicted to drugs to blot out emotional pains, some do it as an act of rebellion and to show their frustration and yet some just to gain the much needed parental attention.

What they do not realize is, that in doing so they are causing serious and irreparable damage to their bodies as well as their minds. Sharing of needles among addicts leads to the spread of AIDS and other diseases. In a state of numbness a person might do something fatal. So, youngsters, if you are listening, kick the drug habit, before it kicks you!
